What the CCAO-F credential certifies
What is the Claude Certified Associate – Foundations certification?
It is one of four official Anthropic Claude certifications. Anthropic’s exam guide states that it validates that an individual can apply Claude to complete business and productivity tasks with minimal guidance — using built-in platform features and tools to streamline workflows, identifying opportunities to improve processes, selecting approaches that balance quality, efficiency and cost, and recognising limitations so more complex or technical work is escalated to Claude Architects and Developers.

It is intended for professionals who use Claude as a productivity tool and build Claude Projects in their day-to-day roles — across operations, marketing, project management, education, communications and general knowledge work. Anthropic notes it covers both internal staff who maintain AI-enabled workflows and external consultants who support implementation, use-case identification and process redesign.
Candidates “generally have limited to moderate technical expertise” and sit between casual prompt users and technical AI practitioners.

Anthropic is unusually direct about this. The certification is not intended for software developers who build against APIs or design agentic systems, nor specialists in machine learning, software engineering, or advanced AI system design. Anthropic states candidates are not expected to design enterprise-scale AI architectures or integrations — “that scope belongs to the Claude Architect and Claude Developer credentials.”

Format, blueprint, and what it costs
What are the exam format, question count, and passing score?
The CCAO-F exam has 60 items — multiple-choice and multiple-response, where each item states how many responses to select — with a 120-minute time limit and a passing score of 720 on a scale of 100–1,000. Results are reported as pass/fail with your scaled score, plus percent-correct by domain. Scoring is criterion-referenced: you are measured against a fixed standard, not against other candidates.

The exam fee is US $99, and the fee shown at checkout reflects any discount that applies to your partner tier. The credential is valid for 12 months from the date it is awarded. It is delivered by Pearson VUE, either online-proctored or at a test center, and you may cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours before your appointment — changes inside 24 hours forfeit the fee.

The blueprint defines 7 weighted content domains. Weights are the approximate proportion of scored items drawn from each domain, set by job task analysis:

The heaviest single domain is Output Evaluation and Validation at 21% — more than prompting itself. The exam is weighted toward knowing when Claude is wrong, not toward getting clever answers out of it.

There are no mandatory prerequisites and no required courses. Anthropic states plainly that the experience below is recommended, not required, and that the credential is awarded on exam performance alone, with no software-development or API experience needed.
- Regular, hands-on experience using Claude in a professional setting
- A foundational understanding of structured problem-solving, workflow design, and digital tool usage
- Experience in roles such as business analyst, project manager, operations lead, marketing/communications/HR/education professional, consultant, or knowledge worker
- A practical understanding of AI limitations, including hallucinations, context constraints, and data sensitivity
How do you prepare for it?
Anthropic is explicit that there is no single required course, and that it does not guarantee any particular resource ensures a passing result. Its own advice is to work the blueprint: self-assess against each domain objective, review the official documentation for the features named in the blueprint, and above all build real things with them. What does this credential not guarantee?
- It is a knowledge exam, not an audit of delivered work. Nobody inspected a system this person built.
- It expires after 12 months. A badge with no date attached tells you very little — ask when it was awarded.
- There are no prerequisites, so it certifies exam performance, not years served.
- It says nothing about domain knowledge in your industry, or about whether someone is good to work with.
- It is an individual credential and is distinct from the Claude Partner Network, which is a programme for firms.
