What is the Claude Certified Architect – Foundations certification?
It is one of four official Anthropic Claude certifications. Anthropic’s exam guide states that it validates that a practitioner can make informed decisions about trade-offs when implementing real-world solutions with Claude — covering foundational knowledge across Claude Code, the Claude Agent SDK, the Claude API, and the Model Context Protocol.

It is intended for practitioners who design Claude solutions end to end — choosing deployment platforms and shaping agentic architectures. Anthropic's certification overview describes the Architect track as being for “partners who design Claude solutions end to end.”
The candidate “typically has 6+ months of practical experience building with Claude APIs, Agent SDK, Claude Code, and MCP, understanding both the capabilities and limitations of large language models in production environments.”

Format, blueprint, and what it costs
What are the exam format, question count, and passing score?
The CCAR-F exam has 60 items — multiple-choice and multiple-response, where each item states how many responses to select — with a 120-minute time limit and a passing score of 720 on a scale of 100–1,000. Its structure is distinctive: 4 scenarios are drawn at random from a bank of 6, and each scenario frames a set of questions inside a realistic production context. Results are reported as pass/fail with your scaled score, plus percent-correct by domain. Scoring is criterion-referenced: you are measured against a fixed standard, not against other candidates.

The exam fee is US $125, and the fee shown at checkout reflects any discount that applies to your partner tier. The credential is valid for 12 months from the date it is awarded. It is delivered by Pearson VUE, either online-proctored or at a test center, and you may cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours before your appointment — changes inside 24 hours forfeit the fee.

The blueprint defines 5 weighted content domains. Weights are the approximate proportion of scored items drawn from each domain, set by job task analysis:

Agentic Architecture & Orchestration at 27% is the single heaviest domain in any of the four exams. Note also that Claude Code is weighted at 20% here against 3.1% on the Developer exam — the Architect credential is the more demanding test of Claude Code fluency, which is the opposite of what most people assume.

Anthropic publishes the full scenario bank in the exam guide. Four of these six are presented at random on the day. These are the scenario contexts, not exam questions — the questions themselves are not public, and we do not reproduce or guess at them:

What experience is expected, and are there prerequisites?
There are no mandatory prerequisites and no required courses. Anthropic states plainly that the experience below is recommended, not required, and that the credential is awarded on exam performance alone.
- 6+ months of practical experience building with Claude APIs, the Agent SDK, Claude Code, and MCP
- Managing context windows across long documents, multi-turn conversations, and multi-agent handoffs
- Integrating Claude into CI/CD pipelines for automated code review, test generation, and pull request feedback
- Making sound escalation and reliability decisions, including error handling, human-in-the-loop workflows, and self-evaluation patterns
How do you prepare for it?
Anthropic is explicit that there is no single required course, and that it does not guarantee any particular resource ensures a passing result. Its own advice is to work the blueprint: self-assess against each domain objective, review the official documentation for the features named in the blueprint, and above all build real things with them. This is the default credential to look for if you are commissioning a Claude system and need someone to own the design. For a first serious build, an Architect – Foundations holder is the person who tells you what to build and why; a Developer builds it.

What does this credential not guarantee?
- It is a knowledge exam, not an audit of delivered work. Nobody inspected a system this person built.
- It expires after 12 months. A badge with no date attached tells you very little — ask when it was awarded.
- There are no prerequisites, so it certifies exam performance, not years served.
- It says nothing about domain knowledge in your industry, or about whether someone is good to work with.
- It is an individual credential and is distinct from the Claude Partner Network, which is a programme for firms.
