What the CCAR-P credential certifies
What is the Claude Certified Architect – Professional certification?
It is one of four official Anthropic Claude certifications. Anthropic’s exam guide states that it validates that an individual can design, build, and deliver production-grade AI solutions using Anthropic’s Claude platform — selecting appropriate models, architectures and API patterns; applying prompt and context engineering; integrating Claude into enterprise systems; and incorporating evaluation, security, compliance and governance considerations into their designs.

It is intended for mid- to senior-level technical professionals who design, build and deliver production-grade AI solutions — solution architects, AI/ML engineers, technical leads and senior software engineers. Anthropic notes these professionals are “often involved in stakeholder engagement, advising clients or internal teams, and leading architectural decisions, including discussions of security, legal, and executive considerations,” typically across financial services, healthcare, retail, technology, education and government.
Anthropic states the credential signals the holder “can own or significantly contribute to the full lifecycle of a Claude-powered system.”

Anthropic is unusually direct about this. The certification is not intended for entry-level developers, casual users of Claude-based applications, or individuals without experience designing end-to-end AI systems. It also excludes roles that are purely non-technical or limited to isolated tasks such as prompt writing without broader system design responsibility.

Format, blueprint, and what it costs
What are the exam format, question count, and passing score?
The CCAR-P exam has 63 items — multiple-choice and multiple-response, where each item states how many responses to select — with a 120-minute time limit and a passing score of 720 on a scale of 100–1,000. Results are reported as pass/fail with your scaled score, plus percent-correct by domain. Scoring is criterion-referenced: you are measured against a fixed standard, not against other candidates.

The exam fee is US $175, and the fee shown at checkout reflects any discount that applies to your partner tier. The credential is valid for 12 months from the date it is awarded. It is delivered by Pearson VUE, either online-proctored or at a test center, and you may cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours before your appointment — changes inside 24 hours forfeit the fee.

The blueprint defines 7 weighted content domains. Weights are the approximate proportion of scored items drawn from each domain, set by job task analysis:

Two domains here appear on no other exam in the family: Governance, Safety & Risk Management (14%), which names GDPR, HIPAA and FedRAMP explicitly, and Stakeholder Communication & Lifecycle Management (14%), which covers structured discovery, SLA expectation-setting, architecture documentation and handover. Together that is 28% of the exam spent on the consulting job rather than the engineering one.

There are no mandatory prerequisites and no required courses. Anthropic states plainly that the experience below is recommended, not required, and that the credential is awarded on exam performance alone.
- A foundation in software engineering best practices (modular design, separation of concerns, scalability)
- 3+ years of experience in systems architecture or platform engineering
- 6+ months of hands-on experience with Claude or comparable LLM-based systems in production
- Experience delivering end-to-end systems from discovery through deployment and operationalisation
Because there are no prerequisites anywhere in the family, “Professional” does not imply the holder also passed Foundations, and a Foundations pass is not a step someone must have taken first. The four exams are independent. Treat them as four separate statements about a person, not as a ladder someone has climbed.
How do you prepare for it?
Anthropic is explicit that there is no single required course, and that it does not guarantee any particular resource ensures a passing result. Its own advice is to work the blueprint: self-assess against each domain objective, review the official documentation for the features named in the blueprint, and above all build real things with them. What does this credential not guarantee?
- It is a knowledge exam, not an audit of delivered work. Nobody inspected a system this person built.
- It expires after 12 months. A badge with no date attached tells you very little — ask when it was awarded.
- There are no prerequisites, so it certifies exam performance, not years served.
- It says nothing about domain knowledge in your industry, or about whether someone is good to work with.
- It is an individual credential and is distinct from the Claude Partner Network, which is a programme for firms.
